ABOUT 100 RESILIENT CITIES

100 Resilient Cities, Pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation (100RC) is a new organization dedicated to helping cities be better prepared for and quickly rebound from 21st century shocks and stresses. Selected from an international competition, 100 Resilient Cities will work with 100 member cities for whom it plans to provide four kinds of value: 1) Financial and other support for cities to appoint and empower a Chief Resilience Officer (CRO); 2) Support for development of a robust resilience strategy; 3) Management of a peer-to-peer network of member cities who are pioneering a field of resilience practice in local government; and 4) Connections to solutions, service providers, and other partners who can help cities implement their resilience strategies. 100RC seeks to increase awareness of the importance of resilience thinking, to catalyze a new community of urban resilience professionals, and to spur the growth of a robust ecosystem of resilience-focused solutions and solution providers.

ABOUT THE ROLE

100 Resilient Cities is looking for a Director in New York to lead our Knowledge and Impact Team. This critical role will lead a team responsible for designing and implementing the organization’s knowledge management strategy, and overseeing monitoring and evaluation of the organization’s program. This includes improving systems to gather knowledge across the organization, managing the distillation of that knowledge into real insights, overseeing the evaluation of the impact of our work with cities and partners, leading the incorporation of what we’ve learned into our program design and disseminating the impact we are having to strategic stakeholders and the broader public, when appropriate.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Aggregating, analyzing, and sharing knowledge and insights across the organization, and with our partners and stakeholders.
  • Continue to optimize knowledge management systems to improve how we capture lessons, identify trends and gather insights across the organization. This includes, but is not limited to the following categories:
    • The Resilience Strategy Development Process – the process each of our member cities completes to create their resilience strategy
    • Tool development and optimization to support the Resilience Strategy Development Process
    • Chief Resilience Officer feedback on the program
    • Reflections/observations from our City Relationships team on their work with our member cities
    • Reflections/observations from our consulting partners on their work with our member cities
    • Platform partners’ offerings and the implementation of their resilience solutions and services
    • Information captured by our monitoring and evaluation external evaluators
  • Build upon our existing systems, such as our internal Initiative Database and Indicator tracking, while identifying new structures, resources or systems that would continue to improve how the organization generates and captures this knowledge in a systematic way.
  • The incorporation and dissemination of our knowledge is another critical part of this role. Among the main channels/audiences to target:
    • Leveraging our knowledge to help us improve our offerings and program design; our organizational effectiveness; and our growth strategies
    • Collaborating with our City Solutions and Communications team on how we inform ‘the market’ of what we are learning in terms of resilience challenges and city demands so that they respond by innovating and creating new solutions to meet them
    • Developing compelling insights, evidence, and stories, in partnership with the Communications team, of what we are learning and share it with the broader public via our website, white papers, articles or other mediums.
  • Finally, this role is responsible for managing the organization’s external and internal strategies for monitoring and evaluation of the organization’s impact. This includes:
    • Managing relationships and informing delivery and design of our 5 yr external evaluation, including liaising with The Rockefeller Foundation M&E staff, external evaluators and subcontractors.
    • Partnering with 100RC Operations on organizational performance management, and grant reporting from our cities, including optimizing those processes, and analyzing findings to inform program design and organizational management.
    • Designing and overseeing internal data collection and evaluation of organizational progress toward our Theory of Change and strategic objectives, including “100RC by the Numbers” 

Inclusive of all of the above responsibilities, this position requires a capacity to support the organization in embracing a culture of data-driven decision making and learning. Success in this regard requires partnerships with all functional teams, and an adaptive and energetic mindset to support the behavior change and cross-department collaboration necessary to identify new processes and systems that can help us track and aggregate information effectively across the organization. In particular, it will require partnering closely with the Operations team in strengthening our data management systems and data tracking processes.

Desired Qualifications and Experience

  • Deep experience working directly with cities on urban resilience and deep understanding of 100RC’s model and program
  • Minimum of 10-12 years related working experience; Bachelor's degree required, Masters degree preferred
  • Experience with implementing knowledge management and cross-functional strategies/systems required
  • Proven ability to organize and synthesize large quantities of information into the most relevant trends and insights
  • Ability to influence with limited authority and drive behavior change towards institutionalizing a culture of knowledge and learning
  • Strong ability to drive progress, have vision, promote innovation, and display ownership under ambiguous and dynamic conditions
  • Excellent at both strategic and operational thinking and planning, and able to tie the two together and flexibly switch between both modes
  • Strong manager with experience building capacity of junior staff and operating successfully in a matrixed management environment
  • Experience with Monitoring & Evaluation methods
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Proven process and project management skills
