100 Resilient Cities – Pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation (100RC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping cities to be better prepared for and quickly rebound from 21st century shocks and stresses. 100 Resilient Cities has selected and is working with 100 member cities from around the globe for whom it provides four kinds of value, to start: 1) Financial and other support for putting in place a new city resilience leader, a Chief Resilience Officer; 2) Support for development of a robust resilience strategy; 3) Management of a peer-to-peer network of member cities who can learn from and help each other; and 4) Connecting member cities to curated solutions of services provided by Platform Partners who can help them to implement their resilience strategies. 100RC seeks to increase awareness of the importance of resilience thinking, to catalyze a new community of urban resilience practitioners and spur the growth of a robust ecosystem of resilience-focused solutions and solution providers.

100RC is looking for a full-time Data Associate to assist its Knowledge & Impact (K&I) unit to execute quantitative and qualitative analyses that will help us better understand the urban resilience challenges our member cities face, the solutions they are generating, and the impact of their efforts to date. The K&I team is a small unit working in tandem with our global staff and various functional teams to fulfill its twofold mission of: aggregating, analyzing and sharing insights and knowledge across the organization and with our partners; and evaluating the impact of our work and success made toward our Theory of Change.

The Data Associate will have the opportunity to support senior managers on K&I in pursuit of both of those goals, and moreover will bring technical skills to 100RC that will be a critical resource to all staff. We are seeking a candidate who can not only support for our existing systems, but who can take initiative and drive innovation around new opportunities to fully exploit the potential of our data in pursuit of our mission to build a global urban resilience movement.

This is a unique opportunity to help a growing global non-profit build capacity and develop its approach around data analysis and visualization techniques. We are looking for a candidate who is in the early stages of their career, confident in their software and quantitative data analytics skills, and ready to creatively apply that skillset in the service of an organization that is ramping up its commitment to building robust global datasets from which to extract new insights on urban resilience building, and craft compelling new stories to share with the world.

The Data Associate will play a key role in maintaining and growing at least two key projects: the Initiative Database and 100RC by the Numbers. The Initiative Database is a comprehensive, dynamic database of the thousands of resilience initiatives launched globally by our member cities. In this role, they will serve as a resource to global staff in fully exploiting and querying the data, including by producing regular reporting and data visualizations. 100RC by the Numbers is our internal system for tracking and collecting data to monitor and measure organizational progress and impact. As part of this role, they will partner with global teams to track quarterly impact indicators, cleaning and aggregating reports based on the data, as well as serve as a support on other qualitative monitoring and evaluation sources, such as Member City grant reports. Both of these workstreams will feed into the creation of new knowledge products for our networks and partners.

The candidate should have demonstrated experience with data analysis, research, knowledge management, and monitoring and evaluation; passion for turning data into accessible knowledge and stories; and an interest in the practice of urban resilience and the mission of 100RC.

  • Partner with senior members of the team to identify insights and learnings about our impact; synthesize and share
  • Maintain the organization’s suite of knowledge resources, including qualitative stories of impact
  • Assist us in revising our approach for optimizing collection and analysis of data, in expanding our vision of the potential use-cases for our datasets, and in scoping potential new software tools for managing and exploiting them
  • Write data processing scripts to calculate indicators using statistical and analytic techniques
  • Conduct data analysis for various teams across the organization, including preparing memos, tables, graphs, maps, or other visualizations of our data
  • Leverage data in order to:
    • Enhance our knowledge management systems and capabilities
    • Improve our ability to analyze and tell a global story of urban resilience
